"[In the road to Emmaus,] Jesus walks with two disciples who did not grasp the meaning of all that happened to him, and are leaving Jerusalem and the community behind... Wanting to accompany them, he joins them on the way. He asks them questions and listens patiently to their version of events, and in this way he helps them recognize what they were experiencing... As they listen to him speak, their hearts burn within them and their minds are opened; they then recognize him in the breaking of the bread" (Christus Vivit, #237).

Theme: Recognize

"[In the road to Emmaus,] Jesus walks with two disciples who did not grasp the meaning of all that happened to him, and are leaving Jerusalem and the community behind... Wanting to accompany them, he joins them on the way. He asks them questions and listens patiently to their version of events, and in this way he helps them recognize what they were experiencing... As they listen to him speak, their hearts burn within them and their minds are opened; they then recognize him in the breaking of the bread, (Christus Vivit, #237)."

If people are holy ground because they are made in God's image, then we must learn to recognize Christ in others. Just as the Good Samaritan looked for and recognized Christ’s presence in the wounded man, we should search for Christ in the hurt, the lonely, the poor. But we also must recognize and accept that we too are wounded and need to let others serve Christ in us.
