Ways to Serve

Thursday Service Challenge and Ideas:

Today's challenge is to dive into the Good News of God's Word! While you are working today, memorize at least one Scripture verse. You can choose one of the examples below, or choose one that is particularly meaningful to you. As you repeat that verse in your head today, let it sink in and give meaning to the work you do.

  • Find a meaningful Scripture verse to memorize; examples include the following:

    • Micah 6:8

    • John 3:16

    • Matthew 25:40

    • Luke 6:20

    • John 10:10

    • Colossians 3:15-16

    • Romans 6:5

    • Acts 1:8

    • Acts 2:42

    • 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (the word for "love" in Greek is caritas which means charity or "love of neighbor")

  • Pray about who you need to forgive in your life, then reach out (call, text, write a letter) and tell them that you forgive them.

  • Read Chapter 4 of Pope Francis’ “Christ is Alive” – Click Here for a PDF - it's only 6 pages, do it!!

  • Record an audio file of yourself reading a small fiction book or a book of the Bible, and send it to a nursing home to be “read aloud” to residents.

  • Take sidewalk chalk and write a Scripture verse, “You are loved!” or “God loves you!” on people’s driveways or sidewalks while they are gone to work. Maybe draw a picture.

  • If you didn’t do it yesterday, write thank you notes to people you have had an impact on your life, and pray for them as you write the note.

  • With permission, wash cars. Your parents’ cars. Your own car if you have one. Lots of them in your neighborhood. Offer to do it for free and be good news to your neighbors.

  • Take a walk around the neighborhood and say hello to every neighbor. Say something positive to them to spread joy.

  • Make a video or simple social media post about “some good news” you’ve seen in your life, whether that is GSP-related or something with your family, friends, or neighbors.

  • Contact three people you haven’t talked to in a while and catch up with them.

  • Reach out to three people you know are living alone or might be lonely, and have a nice, long talk with them.

  • Call the people you love but haven’t talked to – grandparents, aunts or uncles, cousins, etc – and tell them you love them.

Thursday Teen Reflection Questions While Serving:

While serving today, think about these things:

  • What is God saying to me in the Scripture that I am memorizing? Why did I choose that particular verse?

  • How is my service today (all week, and always) acting as "good news" for other people?

  • What is God's "good news" for me this week?
