GSP Just for Parents

Notes for Parents:

The Good News for parents is that, despite stereotypes of teens, studies show that most teens today mimic their parents' views and practices on religion. In other words, they will not be easily led astray from faith; instead, their faith (both belief and practice) will look a lot like yours.

  1. The most important thing a parent can do to raise their child in faith is to live the Catholic faith themselves. Today is a good day to examine how well you have been modelling faith for your child. Is Mass a priority for me and my family? Do I pray regularly by myself? Do I read my Bible? Are there Catholic images around our house (e.g. a crucifix, Bible, picture, rosary, or small holy water font)? Do I talk about faith around my kids?

  2. Today is about the Good News. Have I ever (or regularly) reflected on the fact that Jesus came and died for ME? If the resurrection really happened, what does that mean for me?

  3. Your teen was challenged to memorize a Scripture verse today. Ask which verse they want to memorize, and do it with them. Maybe open your Bible today and read from the Gospel of Mark (it's the shortest of the four Gospels), and let your teen see you read it. Maybe even talk about it with them.

  4. This would be a great day to get the whole family in the car and drive to church. Find 30 minutes today to either go in or just stand/sit outside the chapel, somewhere near the tabernacle. Spend that time in quiet prayer and allow God's presence to fill you up. Ask for the grace to be a good a example of faith for your family.

  5. These are the questions that we will be asking on Zoom call. It's ok to ask your child some of these questions:

  • How did your service go today?

  • What was it like memorizing Scripture? What verse did you choose?

  • Marisally told a story of feeling unworthy of love. How you ever felt that way?

  • What exactly is the Good News Jesus proclaims to us?

  • If that Good News is real, what might it mean for you and your life?

  • Marisally gave us a three-part challenge (see below). Who came to mind, and how might you show them God's love this week? (End with a challenge to really do this!)

  • Sit quietly in the love of God.

  • Think of someone who you see regularly – whomever comes to mind first.

  •  How can I love that person with my time, hands, and heart, and with the same love with which God loves us?
